PHOTOGRAPHERS/BUSINESS OWNERS

Seven years ago, when I decided I wanted to be a photographer, I literally had no clue what I was doing. Well, of course I knew how to take pictures on a professional level. But that’s basically it. As silly as I feel to confess this– I had no idea that being a professional photographer really meant being a business owner. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize if I wanted to make a living with doing my dream job, I’d have to learn everything it takes to run a successful business.

And so I did. For seven years, I have been educating myself both through mentorships, workshops, online courses, and of course the ever painful “real world” experiences that come with building a business in real time. I have grown tremendously– from charging a meager $900 for my first ever wedding job to now running a six figure photography business.

In the process, I have also really grown to LOVE the act of building my business just as much as taking photos. I now enjoy marketing as if it were a sport. Sales is my current favorite 5 letter word. Getting on the phone and talking to potential clients finally fills me with enthusiasm instead of filling me with vomit-inducing nerves. It brings me pride and joy to run my business, and to constantly work on it to make it even better.

All too often, I still see fellow photographers and other creative-based business owners struggling to make things work. I see the very simple and small actionable changes they need to make, even when they can’t see it for themselves. I see the missing puzzle pieces in their pricing, sales and marketing. I see it because I’ve been there myself. It’s a familiar beast that I have finally understood how to tame.

I believe the world is a better place when people can follow their passions, and make a living doing what makes them happy. I know JFK was right when he sad that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” And I know that a huge part of the reason I am able to run my business is because of those who have shared their expertise with me.
